Prompt Engineering

A plain-language explanation for writers, not engineers.

What It Means

The practice of crafting specific instructions (prompts) to guide an AI model's output. Skilled prompt engineers can produce highly targeted, natural-sounding text by carefully structuring their requests, including examples, constraints, and style guidance.

Why writers should care: Good prompt engineering makes AI text harder to detect, which raises the stakes for everyone whose writing is scrutinized.

In Context

As prompt engineering improves, the arms race between generation and detection accelerates. A carefully crafted prompt can instruct an AI to vary sentence length, introduce deliberate imperfections, adopt a specific voice, and mimic the kind of "burstiness" that detectors associate with human writing. The result is AI text that is statistically indistinguishable from human text - which means the entire premise of statistical detection is under pressure.
